Squirrelmail on Shared Server

I have read here in many threads that people HAVE setup their own install of Squirrelmail/Nutsmail on a shared server.

for instance: http://forums.hostgator.com/nutsmail...ng-t70396.html
(read past the first comment that says it's impossible).

I have tried to do this myself and failed. When I login, I get this error message...

Error opening ../data/default_pref
Could not create initial preference file!
/squirrelmail/data/ should be writable by user cking
Please contact your system administrator and report this error.

I think I have not setup my config.php correctly.

Can anyone who has setup Squirrelmail on a shared server help me out???
