Detecting and re-directing mobile devices

Googling hasn't completely solved the mystery for me, so I'm asking the question here: What is the easiest, most efficient, least problematic way for a non-pro site designer like me to detect mobile devices and then give them mobile-friendly content?

Server side - php? Javascript? Combination? Other?

Note: I am code-talk illiterate.

If it's beyond the scope of a beginner's capabilities, then would anyone out there consider doing this for me for an affordable fee - or barter for some pro graphics design?
