I've been with HostGator since 2007. For serving a smallish web community from their shared servers they were and are great. Good value for money there.
Their technical support however has suffered greatly from their expansion. It used to be great, but now it's quite awful. Tedious answer/reply sessions over email with no resolution, phone support that clearly doesn't know the answer. If (and that is a big if) a question gets escalated, you can still get an answer. Frequently, that answer contradicts or negates pretty much everything frontline support has told you.
The reason I am leaving Hostgator is that incoming spam is out of control. They have SpamAssassin, but have disabled all learning features, which means that if your email address is a little older, you end up getting hundreds of spam each day. I've been informed that that is how it is, so live with it, (of course, it took a number of phone calls, countless infuriating emails back and forth and posting on this forum, before I was told that, unlike what frontline support told me, sa-learn is not supported).
Bonus gripe. I use different email addresses for each company I register with. Over the (8+) years, I have only had 4 of those email addresses end up on spam lists (surprisingly!). Guess who one of those four was? Yes, Hostgator. Somehow they lost my email address to a spammer.
