How to enable my web server php function?

I tried to put a simple hello.php file in my web server root directory, public_Html. When I use Explorer 8 to open it, http://www.mydomain.com/hello.php it doesn't show and jump a HostGator page to suggest a wrong operation.
Do I need to do something to let HostGator enable php function to my web server?
